The Imbros Gorge walk is a full-day, small-group hike through the 8 km Imbros Gorge in south-west Crete, starting from Imbros village at roughly 780 metres on the southern side of the White Mountains and finishing at Komitades village near the Libyan Sea. The walk is downhill on a well-defined path and takes 2-3 hours at a relaxed pace, with the whole outing running 5-7 hours including hotel pickup and drop-off in an air-conditioned mini-van. It is the most family-friendly of the Cretan gorges - shorter, less crowded and less steep than Samaria - and it is priced at 290 EUR flat for the group, up to 8 people. The hike begins at Imbros village, the northern entrance to the gorge, at about 780 metres above sea level on the southern flank of the White Mountains. This traditional mountain village has served for centuries as a natural passage between northern and southern Crete. From the edge of the village the trail drops gently into the gorge and follows the line of the dry riverbed, with open ground and low vegetation at first and wide views toward Sfakia, so walkers can settle into the terrain gradually.
The gorge then closes in. Limestone walls rise on both sides through the upper section, the floor turns to compact earth and scattered stone, and the canyon narrows steadily while staying comfortable underfoot. At Stenada Imbrou - the Narrow Passages of Imbros - the walls squeeze to less than two metres apart in places and rise vertically overhead, forming shaded corridors of rock. This is the visual highlight of the route, often described as a smaller-scale version of the Iron Gates of Samaria.
Below the narrows the canyon opens out again, shrubs and small trees appear, and the walls lose height as the air warms. The final stretch is wide and flat with few rocky obstacles, and the route ends at Komitades village, the southern exit, from where the countryside runs down toward Chora Sfakion and the coast. Imbros is traditionally used as the alternative to Samaria: shorter, gentler, well marked, and historically significant as the line of the 1941 Allied evacuation to the south coast.
How the day runs
Imbros village - the northern entrance
Hotel pickup at 07:00 in an air-conditioned mini-van, then the drive up to Imbros village at roughly 780 metres above sea level. The village marks the official start of the gorge and has long been a crossing point between the north and south coasts. The trail leaves the village edge and descends gently along the natural line of the dry riverbed, with low vegetation and open views toward Sfakia.

After the first descent the rock walls begin to rise and the path becomes enclosed. Limestone formations, compact earth and scattered stones define the footing. The gorge narrows slowly into a proper canyon while remaining easy to walk, and the steady gradient and quiet atmosphere make this a good stretch for looking at the geology rather than watching your feet.
Stenada Imbrou - the narrow passages
Further south the gorge reaches its most dramatic part. The canyon narrows to less than two metres in places and the walls rise vertically on both sides, forming tall corridors of stone that hold shade and give a strong sense of scale. This is the section people come to see, and it is frequently compared, on a smaller scale, to the Iron Gates of Samaria.
Middle Imbros Gorge
Beyond the narrows the canyon widens and the terrain opens up. The path follows the dry riverbed across a broader floor with gently sloping sides, and vegetation increases - shrubs and small trees along the route. The balance here is between scenery and easy going, so the pace stays comfortable.
Lower Imbros Gorge
Continuing south the walls lose height and the environment turns warmer and drier, with a distinctly Mediterranean character. The path is wider and flatter with fewer rocky obstacles, and this is the easiest section of the whole walk. It marks the transition from mountain terrain to the lowlands of southern Crete.
Komitades village - the southern exit
The route ends at Komitades, the official exit of the gorge and historically a resting and transition point for travellers heading to the coast. The canyon gives way to open countryside here, and Chora Sfakion and the south-coast beaches are close by. The van collects you and returns you to your hotel or car.
