Samaria Gorge Explorer is a full-day guided hike through Samaria Gorge National Park in western Crete, covering the 16 km trail from Xyloskalo on the Omalos Plateau at roughly 1,250 metres down through the Iron Gates to the coastal village of Agia Roumeli on the Libyan Sea. The walk takes the average hiker 5 to 7 hours and the whole day runs about 12 hours, with a 06:30 hotel pickup in an air-conditioned minivan and the ferry and bus logistics handled for you. The gorge is typically open from 1 May to 31 October, and the tour costs 350 EUR for up to eight participants, with the 10 EUR gorge entrance fee and the ferry ticket paid separately.

The day starts at Xyloskalo, the northern entrance to Samaria Gorge National Park on the Omalos Plateau, at an altitude of about 1,250 metres. Xyloskalo means 'wooden staircase', and the name is earned immediately: the first section is steep stone steps and rocky ground cut into the mountainside, with panoramic views over the White Mountains. The air is cool and fresh up here, and the descent is hard on the knees - this is one of the most physically demanding parts of the route.
Further down, the trail reaches the old settlement of Samaria at the heart of the gorge. This central section is flatter and more open, and it is the natural place to rest. Abandoned stone houses, the church of Osia Maria and the remains of village life mark a place that was inhabited year-round until the area became a protected national park. It is roughly the midpoint of the hike.
Below the village the path drops into the lower riverbed, where the walls rise higher and close in, boulders block the line and the sense of scale sharpens. The narrowest point is Sideroportes - the Iron Gates - where the gorge shrinks to a few metres across while the cliffs go up almost vertically for several hundred metres. It is the deepest and most dramatic point of Samaria and one of the best-known natural landmarks in Crete.
After the Iron Gates the terrain flattens and opens, vegetation thins, the air warms and the sea makes itself felt as the trail nears sea level and the southern checkpoint. The hike ends at Agia Roumeli, a remote village on the Libyan Sea reachable only on foot or by boat, where there is time to swim, sit on the beach and eat at a seaside taverna before the ferry back.
How the day runs
Xyloskalo and the descent from Omalos
Pickup at 06:30 from your accommodation and transfer by air-conditioned minivan up to the Omalos Plateau. The hike starts at Xyloskalo, the northern entrance to the national park at about 1,250 metres. The opening section is steep stone steps and rocky terrain carved into the mountainside, cool and fresh, with wide views of the White Mountains - and demanding on the knees.

The trail levels out at the settlement of Samaria in the heart of the gorge, the natural resting point of the route. Abandoned stone houses, the church of Osia Maria and the remains of village life record a community that lived here year-round until the area became a protected national park. This is the midpoint, and the place to eat and rest before the lower gorge.
The lower riverbed and the Iron Gates
Below the village the path follows the dry riverbed closely and the walls rise higher and closer together, with large boulders, narrow passages and exposed ground. At Sideroportes - the Iron Gates - the gorge narrows to a few metres while the cliffs rise almost vertically several hundred metres overhead. It is the deepest and most dramatic point of the walk.
The lower exit and Agia Roumeli
After the Iron Gates the terrain flattens and opens out, vegetation thins and the air warms as the route drops to sea level and the southern checkpoint, the official exit from the national park. The hike ends at Agia Roumeli on the Libyan Sea - accessible only on foot or by boat - with time to swim, rest on the beach and eat at a seaside taverna before the ferry to Chora Sfakion and the drive home.

Is it difficult?+
It is a medium-to-high difficulty hike because of the length and the downhill pressure on the knees. It is not recommended for people with heart conditions or severe knee problems.
What is the best time to visit?+
The gorge is typically open from 1 May to 31 October. May and September offer the best temperatures for hiking.
