Aradaina Gorge & Marmara Beach is a private, on-request guided hike down one of the wildest gorges in south-western Crete, in the Sfakia region on the southern slopes of the White Mountains. The route runs 6.5-7 km from the abandoned village of Aradaina at about 520 metres to Marmara Beach at sea level, a continuous descent of roughly 520 metres over uneven riverbed, stone steps and boulders, ending at a marble-walled bay where you swim before taking a boat taxi back to Loutro or Chora Sfakion. The day runs 8-10 hours with a 07:00 hotel pickup, and the trek is rated hard - it needs good balance, decent fitness and proper footwear.

Aradaina Gorge sits in south-western Crete, in Sfakia, on the southern slopes of the White Mountains. It is one of the most impressive and genuinely wild gorges on the island, known for its steep rock walls, its sustained descent and its exit straight onto the Libyan Sea.
The hike starts near the abandoned village of Aradaina at roughly 520 metres and finishes at Marmara Beach at sea level. Total walking distance is about 6.5-7 km, all of it downhill, with around 520 metres of elevation loss. It is a route for experienced walkers in good physical condition, with proper footwear.
The gorge is quiet in a way few places in Crete still are. Limestone cliffs close in overhead, vegetation is sparse - oleander, wild herbs and low shrubs clinging to the rock, with seasonal flowers in spring - and the natural acoustics leave you with silence, wind and the distant sounds of the mountain. The reward at the end is a swim in a bay carved out of marble, and a boat rather than a walk back.
How the day runs
Aradaina village and the bridge
Pickup at 07:00 and transfer by air-conditioned minivan into Sfakia. The walk begins at the historic, abandoned village of Aradaina, once one of the most important settlements in the area; today stone ruins, old churches and narrow paths make for a quiet, atmospheric start. Beside the village stands Aradaina Bridge, spanning the gorge at a height of about 138 metres - from the deck you get the full measure of the drop before you set off.
Descent into the gorge
From the edge of the village an old stone path leads downhill into the gorge. The landscape turns dramatic quickly: high limestone walls, narrow passages and rocky terrain shaped by water over thousands of years. The route follows the natural bed of the gorge over uneven ground, stone steps and rocky sections, past oleander, herbs and low shrubs. Vertical metal ladders assist the steepest pitches, and a stone-built bypass path exists for anyone who would rather avoid them.
The gorge interior
Deeper in, the gorge shows its best features. Towering limestone cliffs dominate the view and in places narrow the passage to a dramatic squeeze, the rock displaying layers and textures cut by erosion. Vegetation stays sparse and typically southern Cretan, with seasonal flowers adding colour in spring. Between the isolation and the natural acoustics, this stretch is the heart of the walk.
Exit at Marmara Beach
The gorge opens directly onto Marmara Beach, a bay of marble-white rock and sea caves at the mouth of the canyon. There is free time here to swim and relax before the return, and a taverna at the water's edge. Rather than walking back up, a boat taxi runs from the beach to Loutro or Chora Sfakion, where the minivan meets you for the drive back to your hotel.

Are the iron ladders in Aradaina mandatory?+
No. There is a bypass path - a stone-built trail - for those who suffer from vertigo or prefer not to use the vertical metal ladders.
How difficult is the Aradaina Gorge hike?+
It is considered a hard trek. It requires good balance and physical fitness to navigate the boulders and steep terrain, and it is recommended for experienced walkers with suitable footwear.
