Taste of Crete is a 4-6 hour tasting day from Rethymno that visits small producers instead of restaurants. Pick-up from your accommodation is at 09:30, and the route heads out of the city and into the hills: a beekeeper's farm at Lampini for thyme, pine and carob honey served with local cheese, then a farm at the Potamon Dam for a cold-pressed koroneiki olive oil tasting, where you try dakos, black-eyed beans, fava and stuffed vegetables first without oil and then with it. The day ends with a traditional Cretan lunch of local dishes. It runs every day for up to eight guests, is rated easy, includes a professional photoshoot, and is quoted on request.
- Taste thyme, pine and carob honey straight from a Cretan beekeeper's farm
- The classic pairing of fresh local cheese with honey
- A cold-pressed koroneiki olive oil tasting at a farm by the Potamon Dam
- Dishes tasted twice, first without oil and then with it, to show the difference
- A traditional Cretan lunch of local dishes to finish
- Professional photoshoot included, edited gallery delivered within 48 hours
In Crete food is not just nourishment, it is culture, tradition and pleasure, and this tasting day is built around that idea. It is an invitation to slow down, leave the busy routes behind and get to know the island through its flavours, the small producers who make them and the places where those traditions are still working.
The day begins with honey. Thyme, pine and carob: each variety carries the scent of a different corner of Cretan nature and tells the story of a season, a flower and the bees that worked it. You taste them slowly, letting the aromas open up, and then honey is combined with fresh cheese. The creamy texture against the sweetness is the pairing most guests remember afterwards.
Then comes olive oil, the heart of Cretan cooking. Rather than being described, it is demonstrated: you taste traditional dishes first without oil and then with it. Dakos, black-eyed beans, fava and stuffed vegetables all change character with a spoonful of fresh, cold-pressed oil from the koroneiki variety, and the difference is remarkable - more depth, more richness, more harmony in every bite.
The experience finishes at the table, with a traditional Cretan lunch of local dishes. Throughout, the emphasis is on going to the source: family-run farms and village workshops that larger coaches cannot reach, and producers who show you their own work rather than a demonstration put on for visitors.
How the day runs
09:30 - pick-up and out of the city
We collect you from your accommodation by air-conditioned minivan with an English-speaking driver. The day starts in Rethymno but heads quickly for the hills, where the family farms and village workshops are.
Honey and beekeeping at Lampini
At a beekeeper's farm you taste three varieties of Cretan honey - thyme, pine and carob - each carrying the scent of a different landscape and season. The tasting is unhurried, and finishes with honey served alongside fresh local cheese.
Olive oil tasting at the Potamon Dam
At a farm near the Dam of Potamon you taste fresh, cold-pressed olive oil from the koroneiki variety in the most direct way possible: traditional dishes served first without oil, then with it. Dakos, black-eyed beans, fava and stuffed vegetables each change with the addition, which is the whole point of the exercise.
A traditional Cretan lunch
The day ends around a table with a traditional Cretan lunch of local dishes. Local wine and raki are part of the Cretan table, with mountain tea and lemonade for anyone who prefers not to drink.

Good to know
Is this just another food tour?+
No. Most tours go to restaurants; we go to the source. You visit family-run farms and mountain dairies and see exactly how the food is made. It is a story, not just a meal.
I am vegetarian. Can I still come?+
Definitely. The Cretan diet is naturally built on greens, beans and olive oil, and we will make sure you are well fed with plenty of meat-free options.
Do we stay in the city?+
We start in Rethymno's alleys but head quickly for the hills. You cannot find the real taste of Crete without visiting the traditional village workshops where big buses cannot go.
What about drinks?+
You cannot have a Cretan table without local wine and raki, and we sample both. There is always fresh mountain tea and lemonade for anyone who does not drink, plus a bottle of water during the tour.
Why book with Way to Crete?+
Because we take you to our friends. You meet the producers personally, in a small and relaxed group. It feels like a day out with locals rather than a tourist excursion.
How long is the day and how much does it cost?+
Pick-up is at 09:30 and the experience lasts 4 to 6 hours, every day of the week, for up to eight guests. No price is published: we quote on request, based on group size and pick-up point.

We had a wonderful food tasting experience in Crete with Way to Crete. The tour focused on two of the island’s most important local products: honey and olive oil. We tasted three different varieties of Cretan honey — carob, pine and thyme honey — and it was fascinating to discover how different their aromas and flavours were.
We also had the opportunity to taste Koroneiki olive oil through a food pairing experience, trying it with different local foods and learning how to appreciate its flavour, aroma and characteristics. Ernesto was our guide and made the experience very interesting, relaxed and enjoyable. He shared a lot of knowledge about Cretan traditions, olive oil production and local gastronomy.
A fantastic experience for anyone who wants to discover the authentic flavours of Crete beyond the usual tourist attractions.Andi Muca
