How the day runs
Fortezza Castle
The walk begins at the Fortezza Castle, built between 1573 and 1580 by the Venetians to defend the city from Ottoman and pirate attack. Standing on its walls you feel the weight of the stone and the calm of the horizon, with the whole town and the sea laid out below. The light shifts constantly up here, which makes it the natural place to start photographing.
Nerantze Mosque
Descending towards the centre, we reach the Nerantze Mosque, a clear record of Rethymno's layered history. It was built as a Venetian church, converted into a mosque in 1890 under Ottoman rule, and today serves as a cultural and music hall. The architecture is elegant rather than showy, and the way late sunlight falls across its stone walls gives photographs both warmth and context.
Rimondi Fountain
A few steps away, the sound of running water leads to the Rimondi Fountain, built in 1626. It has been a meeting point for centuries, where locals and travellers stopped to drink, talk and swap news. The lion-head spouts, the carved detail and the cool air around it make this one of the most romantic corners of the old town, and one of the easiest places to catch a natural moment.

It has watched countless sunsets and guided sailors through storms.
