Spring Wildflowers & Orchids of Crete is a seven-day botanical expedition running 11-17 April 2027, at the peak of the island's flowering season. The group is limited to 4-6 participants, so the pace stays personal and there is time for macro photography. The group stays six nights in the mountain village of Spili, driving out each day to Crete's richest habitats: the Omalos Plateau and the upper Samaria Gorge in the Lefka Ori, the Imbros and Aradena gorges, the Kourtaliotiko Gorge and the Preveli palm forest on the south coast, the orchid fields of Gious Kambos, and the high slopes of Psiloritis. The early bird price is EUR 1,490 per person and the regular price is EUR 1,690, with a EUR 250 deposit per person. The price includes six nights in Spili, breakfasts and dinners, picnic lunches on selected excursions, airport transfers, transport, botanical guiding and a macro photography session.

  • A group of four to six, so the stops, the pace and the time with the guide stay personal
  • The Omalos Plateau at nearly 1,000 metres, with Tulipa bakeri, Crocus sieberi and griffon vultures overhead
  • The viewpoints and upper entrance of the Samaria Gorge, where the limestone canyon cuts towards the Libyan Sea
  • An 8 km descent of the Imbros Gorge, then the far larger Aradena Gorge for cliff and rock-face species
  • The Kourtaliotiko Gorge, Preveli Monastery and the Preveli palm forest, home to the endemic Phoenix theophrasti
  • Gious Kambos, one of the most important orchid habitats in Crete and the wider Mediterranean
  • High-altitude flora on the slopes of Psiloritis, including Tulipa cretica and Acantholimon androsaceum

Beyond its beaches and its summer landscapes, Crete is a different island in spring. The mountains fill with wild orchids, tulips, anemones and endemic plants, while gorges, hidden plateaus, old olive groves and untouched coastline make up one of the richest natural environments in the Mediterranean. This trip is built around that short window, and around travelling slowly enough to see it.

The week is limited to four to six people, and that size is the point. With so few guests the guide can stop for one orchid, set a macro lens on a single flower, and give each person time to photograph rather than keep a larger group moving. You travel with a handful of people who came for the same plants, at a pace that stays personal.

The tour is designed for nature lovers, photographers, botanists and birdwatchers alike, and it works for complete beginners as well as experienced field botanists. Comfortable accommodation in Spili serves as a permanent base for all six nights, so there is no packing and repacking: each morning the group drives out to a different landscape and each evening returns to the same village.

Daily excursions cover the Omalos Plateau, the Samaria Gorge viewpoints, Imbros Gorge, Aradena, the Kourtaliotiko Gorge, the Preveli palm forest, Triopetra Beach, Gious Kambos and the high slopes of Psiloritis. Walking is easy and unhurried, with regular stops for observation, photography and botanising, and the days combine field botany with bird watching, local Cretan cooking and long views.

Mid-April daytime temperatures run 18-24C, ideal for walking; the highlands sit at 10-14C and nights in Spili at 12-15C. Weather is mostly sunny with occasional spring showers, which are exactly what drives the bloom. Because rainfall and temperatures shift from year to year, the intensity and the mix of species change with every season.

How the day runs

  1. Day 1 - Arrival and first impressions

We meet at Chania International Airport or Heraklion Airport and drive across the island to Spili. The route is a gentle introduction to Crete, through olive groves, cypress trees and wide open country. After settling in, we take a relaxed walk through the surrounding countryside, where spring is already well under way: fields covered with Anemone coronaria in vivid reds and blues, and carpets of yellow Oxalis pes-caprae. The first orchids may already be out, including Anacamptis pyramidalis, Orchis italica and Himantoglossum robertianum.

  2. Day 2 - Lefka Ori and the Omalos Plateau

After breakfast we drive west into the Lefka Ori, climbing towards the Omalos Plateau. At nearly 1,000 metres the landscape opens into a vast mountain basin ringed by rugged peaks. On the walks we find Crocus sieberi, Scilla nana and cushions of Anchusa caespitosa, with Tulipa bakeri and Tulipa saxatilis spreading across the plateau and Anemone coronaria adding bursts of colour. Orchids emerge across the mountain fields, along with Orchis prisca, Ranunculus asiaticus and Romulea bulbocodium. Griffon vultures circle on the thermals above, and with luck a golden eagle or even a lammergeier appears over the ridges; hoopoes, larks and choughs work the lower ground. From the plateau we also take in the upper entrance and viewpoints of the Samaria Gorge, where the limestone canyon cuts down through the White Mountains towards the Libyan Sea.

  3. Day 3 - Imbros Gorge and Aradena

We head south to walk the Imbros Gorge, an easy but spectacular 8 km descent between towering limestone walls. The cooler, sheltered environment lets specialised plants hold on among the rock faces and crevices: Campanula laciniata, Petromarula pinnata, Staehelina petiolata and the endemic Origanum dictamnus, with Cistus creticus, Salvia fruticosa, Phlomis lanata and Ballota pseudodictamnus along the path. Later we continue to the Aradena Gorge, where the scale is greater again, and botanise among cliffs and rocky slopes for Silene sedoides, Lomelosia cretica and orchids such as Ophrys cretica and Serapias bergonii.

  4. Day 4 - South Crete, Kourtaliotiko, Preveli and the coast

After breakfast we drive south to the Kourtaliotiko Gorge, where sheer cliffs make one of the most dramatic settings on the island and plants such as Inula candida and Capparis spinosa cling to vertical rock. We visit the historic Preveli Monastery, then descend into the Preveli palm forest, where the endemic Phoenix theophrasti grows along the riverbanks and the atmosphere turns unexpectedly lush. The day finishes at Triopetra Beach, with coastal species including Lotus creticus, Eryngium maritimum and Pancratium maritimum among the dunes and rocks, and time to slow down by the Libyan Sea.

  5. Day 5 - Gious Kambos: orchids, tulips and extraordinary diversity

The Gious Kambos plateau is one of the most important botanical landscapes in Crete, and in spring it turns into a mosaic of orchids, tulips and flowering plants. Among the orchids we look for Ophrys cretica, Ophrys heldreichii, Ophrys tenthredinifera, Ophrys fusca, Ophrys episcopalis, Ophrys bombyliflora, Ophrys lutea and Ophrys iricolor, alongside Anacamptis boryi, Anacamptis laxiflora, Anacamptis quadripunctata, Anacamptis collina, Orchis italica, Orchis anthropophora and Orchis pauciflora. The plateau is equally rich in Tulipa doerfleri, Tulipa saxatilis, Fritillaria messanensis, Iris tuberosa, Gladiolus italicus, Arum creticum and Arisarum vulgare. What is out depends on rainfall and seasonal conditions, so the plateau is different every year. Hoopoes call across the grasslands, larks rise from the fields and griffon vultures circle high overhead.

  6. Day 6 - Psiloritis and high mountain flora

Today we climb into the Psiloritis range, towards the higher slopes of Mount Ida. The scenery becomes more rugged and isolated, with mountain views in every direction. Here we find high-altitude species including Tulipa cretica, abundant Crocus sieberi, Cyclamen creticum and Scilla nana, along with Arum creticum, Arum idaeum, Iris unguicularis subsp. cretica, and alpine cushions of Acantholimon androsaceum among the rocks. It is a quieter day, where the reward is in the detail and in the resilience of Crete's mountain flora.

  7. Day 7 - Departure

After breakfast we drive back across the island for departure flights from Chania or Heraklion. The final crossing is a chance to look back on a week of mountain gorges, rare flowers, birds and spring light.

Good to know

Is this tour suitable for beginners or only for botanists?+

It is designed both for experienced botanists and for travellers who simply love nature, walking, photography and authentic experiences. The guide explains the flora, orchids, birds and landscapes in an accessible and engaging way, so it works at every level of knowledge.

What level of walking fitness is required?+

The difficulty level is easy. The tour includes relaxed walks through mountain trails, plateaus, gorges and countryside. Most walks are comfortable and unhurried, with regular stops for observation, photography and botanising. A basic level of walking fitness and comfortable hiking shoes are recommended. The longest single walk is the 8 km descent of the Imbros Gorge on day 3.

When is the best season to see wildflowers and orchids in Crete?+

Mid-April is considered one of the best periods. The island's landscapes are exceptionally vibrant then, with flowering species covering mountains, valleys, plateaus and coastal areas. Seasonal intensity varies slightly each year depending on rainfall and temperatures.

What makes Gious Kambos so special for orchids?+

Gious Kambos plateau is one of the most important orchid habitats in Crete and the wider Mediterranean. Its combination of altitude, soil conditions, climate and seasonal moisture creates an environment where dozens of orchid species bloom together, forming one of the island's richest botanical landscapes.

What is included in the tour package?+

Six nights in Spili, six breakfasts and six dinners of traditional Cretan cuisine, picnic lunches on selected excursions, airport transfers, all transport, botanical excursions, a macro photography session with a dedicated lens, personal guidance and time for nature photography, water, and coordination throughout. The group is capped at six.

How does booking work?+

A EUR 250 deposit per person secures your place, and the balance is paid 8-10 weeks before departure. The early bird rate is EUR 1,490 per person, available until 31 December 2026. The regular rate is EUR 1,690 per person.

How big is the group?+

The departure runs with a minimum of 4 and a maximum of 6 participants. That ceiling is what keeps the week personal: the guide can pause for a single plant, and there is time for each person to use the macro lens rather than photographing from the back of a larger group. You can reserve one place or several; the week goes ahead once four people are booked.

I recently took a guided tour with Way to Crete through Preveli and Patsos-Arkadi, and it was an incredible experience. The tour guides were fantastic—knowledgeable, friendly, and engaging, making the trip both informative and enjoyable. Preveli's stunning beach and palm forest were breathtaking, and we had a lot of time to take it all in. Patsos-Arkadi, with its historical Arkadi Monastery, was equally captivating, brought to life by the guides' fascinating stories. Way to Crete's attention to detail and seamless planning made the tour smooth and enjoyable. I highly recommend Way to Crete for anyone wanting to explore these beautiful regions. This tour was a highlight of my trip!

I was in Spili for two weeks and went on several excursions with Ernesto and his team. I was extremely impressed with their levels of service, professionalism and care. Ernesto is a great guy and tailored excursions to fit with the intricacies of our group (we had a combination of elderly people, babies and toddlers as well as my wife and I). They truly went above and beyond to ensure that we had the best experience. I would not hesitate to recommend Ernesto and his team to anyone looking to see Crete and all the beautiful places it has to offer. If you're thinking of booking with these guys, you won't regret it!
