Melidoni Cave sits above the village of Melidoni in the Mylopotamos hills, about 30 minutes east of Rethymno. It is a single large stalactite chamber rather than a network of passages, reached down a stepped path, and it has been in use since the Neolithic period: a Minoan and later Greek cult site associated with the bronze giant Talos, and a place of refuge for the surrounding villages. In 1824 several hundred villagers, mostly women and children, sheltered here from Ottoman forces and died when fires were lit at the entrance. An ossuary and an altar inside the main chamber commemorate them, and the cave is a place of pilgrimage as much as a tourist site.

The cave
The visit is short and vertical rather than long and horizontal. Steps descend from the entrance into the Hall of Heroes, a chamber tens of metres across with a high roof, hung with stalactites and columns built up over many thousands of years. It is lit, the air is cool and damp all year, and the floor is uneven in places. There is no crawling and no caving equipment involved.
History
Excavation has produced material from the Neolithic period onwards. In antiquity the cave was a place of worship, connected in local tradition with Talos, the bronze guardian of Crete, and inscriptions to Hermes Tallaios have been found here.
The modern history is the reason most visitors come. In 1824, during the Greek War of Independence, around 370 villagers took refuge in the cave. Ottoman troops sealed and lit fires at the mouth, and everyone inside suffocated. Their remains are kept in an ossuary in the main chamber, beneath a marble monument and beside an altar where services are held.
Where it fits
Melidoni is in the Mylopotamos foothills between Rethymno and Heraklion, half an hour from Rethymno. It pairs naturally with Arkadi Monastery, ancient Eleftherna and the pottery village of Margarites, all within the same short circuit of hill country and all telling versions of the same story about resistance and continuity.
Practicalities
An entrance fee is charged and paid on site; the operator does not publish the amount. The path down and back is stepped and can be slippery, so wear shoes with grip. The chamber is cool even in August, which makes it a good stop in high summer. Half an hour inside is enough.
Good to know
What happened at Melidoni Cave?+
In 1824, during the Greek War of Independence, around 370 villagers from the surrounding area took refuge in the cave. Ottoman troops lit fires at the entrance and all of them suffocated. Their remains are kept in an ossuary in the main chamber.
How far is Melidoni Cave from Rethymno?+
About 30 km east, roughly 30 minutes by car, in the Mylopotamos hills.
Is Melidoni Cave hard to get into?+
No. It is a lit, developed cave entered by a stepped path, with no crawling and no equipment needed. The steps are uneven and can be slippery, so shoes with grip help.
How much does it cost?+
There is an admission charge collected at the site and paid on the day. It is not included in tour prices, and the amount is not published on the tour pages.
Is it worth visiting with children?+
Yes, if they are steady on steps. The chamber is large, cool and impressive, and the visit is short. The history is grim and worth deciding in advance how much of it to tell.

- 12 Best Day Trips from RethymnoRethymno is the best day-trip base in Crete because it sits in the middle of the north coast. Within 45 minutes you can reach Lake Kournas and the Argyroupoli springs, the pottery village of Margarites with Arkadi Monastery, and the south coast at Preveli and Triopetra. Within 90 minutes you reach Imbros Gorge and Knossos with the Heraklion Archaeological Museum. Beyond that, at two hours or a little more, lie Aradaina Gorge, the Samaria trailhead at Omalos, the 2,453 m summit of Pachnes, and the pink lagoon at Elafonisi. Every one of the twelve below is a return trip in a single day.
- Things to Do in Crete When It RainsA wet day in Crete is a good day for the parts of the island that have nothing to do with the beach: the caves at Melidoni, Zoniana and Psychro, which are underground and unaffected by weather; monasteries such as Arkadi; the archaeological and folklore museums in Rethymno, Chania and Heraklion; wineries and olive mills, which are working indoor spaces with tastings attached; the pottery workshops at Margarites; and a cooking class, which is the single best use of a wet afternoon. The old towns of Rethymno and Chania also work in rain - the lanes are narrow, roofed cafes are everywhere, and the stone looks better wet. With around 300 sunny days a year, rain is mostly a November-to-March problem, and even then it tends to pass within a few hours.
- The Mountains of CreteCrete has four mountain systems, not one. Psiloritis (Mount Ida) is the highest, rising to 2,456 m at Timios Stavros — a karst limestone massif with five main summits over 2,000 m, designated a UNESCO Global Geopark in 2015. Lefka Ori, the White Mountains of the west, is the largest and wildest: about 57 peaks above 2,000 m and roughly 54 more between 1,500 and 2,000 m, topped by Pachnes at 2,453 m, with the island's deepest gorges cut through it. Dikti in the east reaches 2,148 m at Spathi and wraps in a horseshoe around the fertile Lasithi Plateau. And the Asterousia, south of the Messara Plain, are the southernmost mountains in Europe — lower, at 1,231 m on Kofinas, but dropping straight into the Libyan Sea. All four are limestone, all four are shaped by karst processes that send water underground, and all four are best walked from late spring to early autumn.
