15 Best Family Beaches in Crete

Crete has over 1,000 km of coastline, and a great deal of it is unsuitable for small children: exposed to the north wind, shelving steeply, or half an hour's walk from where you can leave the car. The fifteen below are the ones that actually work, judged on four things — how shallow the water is, whether there is real shade, how close you can park, and whether there is a lavatory and somewhere to buy lunch.

One rule governs everything: when the meltemi blows from the north in July and August, move to the south coast. Damnoni, Plakias, Preveli and Frangokastello stay calm when Rethymno and Chania are getting waves.

What makes a beach work with children

Water safety. A sheltered bay with a long shallow shelf and no current. Crete's north coast catches the meltemi; the south coast catches southerly weather, which is rarer in summer.

Shade. This is the criterion most lists ignore and the one that decides whether you last until four o'clock. Tamarisk trees are the gold standard — Georgioupolis and Plakias have real lines of them. Where there are none, a rented umbrella or your own beach tent is not optional.

Access. Short walk from the car, no steps, no 4x4 track. Balos fails this test badly and Elafonisi passes it only if you arrive before nine.

Facilities. Sunbeds, lavatories, showers and a taverna within a five-minute walk.

The beaches in detail

1. Elafonisi — 2 h 15 from Rethymno

The pink lagoon. The water between the main shore and the small island is knee-deep for a hundred metres, warm, and the safest natural paddling pool on Crete. Sunbeds, umbrellas, beach bars and lavatories; large dirt car parks that fill by mid-morning in August, so arrive before 09:00. Shade is the weakness — bring a tent. 2. Falassarna — 2 h

A vast west-coast sand beach with transparent water and room for football. Fully organised, with volleyball, tavernas and easy parking. It faces the open sea, so it picks up swell on windy days; check the forecast. Best for older children and teenagers who want waves.

3. Almyrida — 35 min

Two sandy beaches either side of a small rocky spit in the Apokoronas, naturally sheltered from the north wind so the water stays flat when everywhere else is choppy. Fish tavernas on the sand, sunbeds, water sports, and a village atmosphere with no nightlife. One of the two best toddler beaches on the island.

4. Georgioupolis — 25 min

Kilometres of sand fed cool by the Almiros river, with a long shallow shelf and a line of tamarisks for genuine shade. Highly organised: beach bars, showers, lifeguards on the main sections. The white chapel of Agios Nikolaos out on its causeway is the walk every child wants to do. Excellent for all ages.

5. Bali (Karavostasis) — 30 min

Four coves east of Rethymno, of which Karavostasis is the most sheltered — the sea barely moves and looks like a swimming pool. Green cliffs behind give afternoon shade, and water taxis run between the coves, which children treat as an attraction in itself. Umbrellas, cafes, snorkelling.

6. Vai — 3 h 30

Europe's largest natural palm forest at the eastern tip of the island, with fine sand and a genuinely tropical look. Full facilities, restaurant, showers, water sports. Real shade under the palms behind the beach. Too far for a day trip from Rethymno, but the reason to spend nights in the east.

7. Damnoni — 45 min

Near Plakias on the south coast: a long sandy bay with a gentle shoreline and, crucially, calm water on the days the north coast is unusable. Sunbeds, beach bars, tavernas nearby, easy access. The reliable summer fallback.

8. Plakias — 40 min

A wide bay with a village directly behind it, so ice cream, lavatories and lunch are all a two-minute walk from your towel. Shallow entry in places, organised sections, showers, and tamarisks at the western end. Works for toddlers through teenagers.

9. Matala — 1 h 45

A compact cove under the sandstone cliffs riddled with Roman-era tombs that became the famous hippy caves. Easy to supervise because it is small, with a lively village behind. The cave walk involves steps and a ticket, so it suits primary-school age upwards; the sea deepens faster than at Frangokastello.

10. Frangokastello — 1 h 15

Wide, flat, extraordinarily shallow sand in front of a Venetian fortress on the south coast. You can walk out a long way before the water reaches an adult's waist, which makes it one of the best toddler beaches in Crete. Almost no natural shade, so bring your own or rent an umbrella early.

11. Stavros — 1 h 10

A near-circular bay on the Akrotiri peninsula under the mountain from the closing scene of Zorba the Greek. Enclosed, calm and small, with tavernas on the waterfront. Ideal for toddlers and for days when the swell is up elsewhere.

12. Agia Marina — 55 min

West of Chania, a long organised strip with sunbeds, showers, restaurants and lifeguards on the busier sections in peak season. Shallow patches suit small children on calm days; it is north-facing, so check the wind before committing.

13. Malia — 1 h 20

East of Heraklion, a wide, soft, well-organised beach with plenty of room. Choose the quiet ends away from the nightlife strip and go in the morning. Sunbeds, showers, water sports and beach bars. Better for older children and teenagers.

14. Agia Pelagia — 50 min

A horseshoe bay west of Heraklion with unusually calm, clear water most days and the village immediately behind, so lunch and lavatories are a short walk. Organised sunbeds and waterfront tavernas. Very good for toddlers and primary-school children.

15. Balos — 2 h plus a rough track or a boat from Kissamos

Spectacular and genuinely difficult. The lagoon shallows are magnificent when the wind is light, but the access road is rough, the walk down is hot and exposed, there is no shade at all, and the wind whips sand across the flats. Treat it as an expedition for older children, go early, and take the boat from Kissamos rather than driving if you can.

Practical tips

• Check the wind first. A north-coast beach in a meltemi is unusable with small children. Switch south.
• Time it. Before 09:30 or after 16:00. The Cretan sun between noon and four is punishing and most of these beaches have no natural shade.
• Sun protection. High-factor cream, UV shirts, and a pop-up tent for unorganised coves.
• Lifeguards are on duty on most major organised municipal beaches from June to September, and nowhere else.
• Elafonisi's pink sand comes from crushed shell and coral. It is a protected natural monument. Do not take any home.
