This is a private full-day trip from Rethymno to Elafonisi, the pink-sand beach and lagoon at the south-western tip of Crete. Pick-up is at 07:00 and the day runs about eight hours, of which roughly four are free time at the beach; the drive is around two and a half hours each way and includes a stop at the cliffs of Topolia Gorge and time in a traditional Cretan village. The pink colour comes from crushed seashells, the lagoon is shallow enough to wade across to the protected islet, and difficulty is easy. The tour runs on request for small groups of up to eight, and a professional photoshoot is included.

  • Pink sand and clear shallow water at Elafonisi, for swimming, sunbathing and exploring
  • Around four hours of free time at the beach - no rushing
  • The wade across the lagoon to the protected islet, where the sand is pinker and the crowds thinner
  • A stop at a scenic viewpoint such as Topolia Gorge or the Agia Sophia Cave
  • A traditional Cretan village on the way, for local architecture and authentic products
  • A professional photoshoot delivered as an edited digital album within 48 hours

Elafonisi is one of the most photographed places in Greece and it earns it: shallow turquoise water, dunes, and sand that runs pink where crushed seashells have washed up along the shoreline. It sits at the far south-western corner of the island, which is why this is a full day rather than an afternoon out, and why an early start matters.

The drive across Crete is part of the day, not a transfer to be endured. The route passes traditional villages, hillsides of olive trees and serious mountain scenery, with your guide filling in the history and natural history as you go, and a stop at a viewpoint such as Topolia Gorge or the Agia Sophia Cave to stretch your legs and take photographs.

At the beach you have around four hours to do as you like. Swim in the warm shallows, walk across the lagoon to the islet - a protected nature reserve with dunes, rare flowers and quieter places to swim - or settle in with a picnic. The beach tavernas do snacks, drinks and light meals if you would rather not carry food.

Déroulement de la journée

  1. Scenic drive across western Crete

The day starts with pick-up from your hotel or an agreed meeting point at 07:00, then a drive across the island past traditional villages, hillsides covered in olive trees and dramatic mountain country. Your guide tells the story of the region as you go, so the journey counts as part of the day rather than dead time. The drive from Rethymno takes about two and a half hours each way.

  2. Topolia Gorge viewpoint

There is a short stop at a viewpoint on the way - usually Topolia Gorge, with its dramatic cliffs and dense greenery, or the Agia Sophia Cave above it. It is a chance to stretch your legs, take photographs and see a side of western Crete most day-trippers drive straight past.

  3. Elafonisi Beach and the lagoon

By late morning you reach Elafonisi. The pink in the sand comes from crushed seashells, and depending on the tide and the light it shows as bands of colour along the shoreline. You have around four hours of free time. Swim in the shallow, warm water or lie on the sand; or walk across the shallow lagoon to the islet opposite, a protected nature reserve with dunes, rare flowers and wildlife, where the sand is pinker and there are more secluded places to swim. Bring a picnic if you like, or eat at one of the small beachside tavernas.

  4. A traditional village on the way back

The return route includes time in a traditional Cretan village, where the appeal is the local architecture, the pace and the chance to buy genuinely local products rather than souvenirs. It also breaks the drive back to Rethymno.

Bon à savoir

Is the sand really pink?+

It is. Depending on the tide and the light you will see beautiful pink stripes along the shoreline, made from crushed seashells. It is even more striking in person.

Is it a long drive from Rethymno?+

About 2.5 hours, but we make it part of the adventure. We drive through the dramatic Topolia Gorge and stop at traditional villages, so the time passes quickly.

Do we have enough time to swim?+

Plenty. We aim to spend about four hours at the beach so you can relax, explore the islet and enjoy the water without feeling rushed.

Should I bring my own umbrella?+

There are sunbeds for rent, but they fill up fast. We recommend bringing a hat and a light beach towel. If you want a quiet, secluded spot away from the crowds, we will show you exactly where to walk.

What time does the tour start and how long does it last?+

Pick-up is at 07:00 and the day lasts about eight hours. The tour runs on request rather than to a fixed weekly schedule, so tell us your dates.

How is the tour priced?+

By the hour for the whole group: €40 per hour for a group of up to four and €50 per hour for five to eight people. Send us your dates and party size and we will confirm the total.

Go early. By eleven the shallow lagoon at Elafonisi is busy and the pink sand on the far spit is the only quiet stretch left — the tour gets you there before the coaches.
