Best Time to Visit Crete: A Month-by-Month Guide

May, September and October are the best months to visit Crete. May and October give you warm days, empty trails and low prices; September gives you the warmest sea of the year without July's crowds. July and August are hot, busy and expensive, and the island is at its least interesting. April is the wildcard: the greenest, most flowered month, and the one with the most closed doors.

Crete is the southernmost island in Greece and gets over 300 days of sunshine a year, but it also has three mountain ranges with snow on them until May, so "Crete in April" means something different at sea level and at 1,500 m.

Sea temperatures are averages for the north coast; the south coast typically runs a degree or two warmer and is much better sheltered in high summer.

The seasons in practice

January and February

Winter is mild but wet, and snow caps the White Mountains. The beach resorts are shut and the coastal strips are ghost towns, but Heraklion, Chania and Rethymno carry on as real cities. This is the season for the Archaeological Museum without a queue, for mountain villages with a fire lit in the taverna, and for very cheap flights. Rain comes in bursts rather than drizzle; you can still get a run of blue days.

March

Spring starts. The island turns green, the first wildflowers appear, and daytime temperatures average 16°C, which is pleasant for walking and far too cold for swimming. Samaria is closed. Prices are at their lowest and the light is superb for photography.

April

The most beautiful month, and the most logistically awkward. The valleys fill with wildflowers, over seventy orchid species and subspecies come into bloom, and the countryside smells of thyme and sage. Days run 18-24°C — warm enough to walk through Knossos at midday without suffering, cool enough to need a jacket after dark.

April is also Greek Orthodox Easter in most years, which is the single best cultural experience on the island: candlelit processions on Good Friday, the whole village outside the church at midnight on Holy Saturday, fireworks, and lamb on the spit the next day. It is not a performance for visitors.

The catch: Samaria is closed, the sea is around 17°C and honestly cold, and some hotels and beach tavernas are only just opening. Read our full guide to Crete in April.

May

Arguably the best month of the year. It is warm at around 24°C, the crowds have not arrived, the island is still green, and Samaria Gorge opens on 1 May. The sea, at 19-20°C, is bracing but swimmable. Hikers get the gorges at their best: full flow in the streams, wildflowers still out, and no queue at the gate. Book the Samaria Gorge Explorer for the first half of the month if you can.

June

Summer proper. Temperatures reach 28°C, the sea passes 23°C and is comfortable for a whole afternoon, and the evenings are long. Everything is open and it is not yet unbearable. Prices climb through the month.

July and August

Peak season. Temperatures regularly exceed 35°C inland, the meltemi blows from the north for days at a time, and the island's population roughly doubles. Life reorganises itself around the heat: early mornings, a long midday pause, and everything happening after seven in the evening.

If you come now, three rules apply. Start walks before eight. Move to the south coast when the meltemi is blowing — Plakias, Damnoni, Preveli and Frangokastello stay calm when the north is churning. And book tours, transfers and restaurants well ahead, because the good ones fill.

September

The connoisseur's month. The families have gone home, the sea is at its warmest of the year after a summer of heating, and daytime temperatures settle around 27°C. You can swim in the morning and walk a gorge in the afternoon without either being a mistake. Prices drop from mid-month.

October

Autumn, and the second-best hiking month after May. Sea temperatures stay around 23°C, so swimming is still comfortable well into the month, and the walking weather is ideal. This is harvest season: grapes come in, raki is distilled in the villages, and every taverna has something new on the table. Samaria closes on 31 October. Some resorts start shutting mid-month.

November and December

The olive harvest, and the island returns to itself. Nets go down under the trees, the tavernas fill with people who live here, and the prices collapse. Days are short and rain is likely, but a mild November afternoon in Crete beats most of Europe. Not a beach holiday; an excellent food and village one.

Altitude changes everything

Crete is not one climate. Sea level in March is a warm 16°C day; the Omalos plateau at 1,250 m is close to freezing overnight and can still have snow. Psiloritis and the White Mountains hold snow into May in a normal year, and the high tracks — including the approach to Pachnes at 2,453 m — are not reliably passable until late spring.

The practical effect is that April and early May can give you a beach in the morning and a genuinely cold mountain in the afternoon. Pack for both. It also means the wildflower season is staggered: coastal phrygana flowers in March, the mid-altitude plateaux such as Gious Kampos in April, and the high pastures in May and June.

Rain, wind and when they matter

Most of Crete's rain falls between November and March, in bursts rather than drizzle, and the west of the island gets considerably more of it than the east. Gorges close after heavy rain — Samaria's season opening is regularly delayed for exactly this reason.

The wind that shapes a summer holiday is the meltemi, a dry northerly that blows in runs of two to five days from roughly July to early September. It makes the north coast choppy and the beaches uncomfortable, and it is the single best argument for booking a base you can drive south from. The south coast at Plakias, Damnoni, Preveli and Frangokastello stays calm through it.

Booking rhythm through the year

July and August need to be booked months ahead: accommodation, car hire and popular tours all sell out, and car hire in particular becomes a seller's market. May, June, September and October need a few weeks' notice for the good hotels and nothing at all for most restaurants. November to March needs almost no planning, but check that what you want to visit is actually open before you set off.
