The Cretan Honey & Wine Experience is a 5-6 hour day from Rethymno that pairs a beekeeper's farm with a family-owned winery. Pick-up from your accommodation is at 09:30. At the apiary you taste three honeys - carob, pine and thyme - alongside rakomelo and local cheese; in the green valley of Patsos a small family winery takes you through the vineyard and the production area before a tasting of five Cretan labels; and the day closes over coffee at Gidospito, beside the Potamon Dam. It runs Monday to Friday for up to eight guests, is rated easy, includes a professional photoshoot, and is quoted on request.

  • Taste carob, pine and thyme honey at a working beekeeper's farm
  • Try rakomelo and the classic Cretan pairing of local cheese with honey
  • Walk a family vineyard in Patsos and see the winery's production area
  • A guided tasting of five Cretan wines and their indigenous grape varieties
  • Close the day with coffee at Gidospito, beside the Potamon Dam
  • Professional photoshoot included, edited gallery delivered within 48 hours

This is a producer day rather than a restaurant day. Crete's food culture is built on a handful of things done well for a very long time - honey, cheese, wine - and the point of this experience is to taste them where they are made and to meet the people who make them.

The first stop is a beekeeper's farm at Lampini. You taste three distinct varieties of Cretan honey: carob, pine and thyme, each with its own aroma and weight on the palate. The tasting continues with rakomelo, the traditional honey-based spirit, and with local cheese served alongside honey, which is the pairing most guests remember: creamy and sweet at once, simple and unexpectedly good.

From there the road climbs into Patsos, a green, well-watered part of inland Rethymno with a long winemaking tradition. The winery is small and family-owned. The visit starts with a guided walk through the vineyard, covering the indigenous grape varieties, what the Cretan climate does to them and the cultivation methods the family has inherited. Inside, you see the production area and the full process, from harvest and fermentation through ageing and bottling, before the tasting itself: five different labels, chosen to show the range of local wine, each explained as you go.

The day ends at Gidospito, near the Potamon Dam, over a traditional coffee and a view of the water and the hills. Transport is by air-conditioned minivan with an English-speaking driver, and an optional guide can be added for an extra fee.

Déroulement de la journée

  1. 09:30 - pick-up from your accommodation

We collect you by air-conditioned minivan and drive inland from the Rethymno coast towards the villages of the interior. The driver speaks English; an optional guide can be arranged in advance for an additional fee.

  2. Honey tasting at the beekeeper's farm

At a beekeeper's farm in Lampini you are introduced to Cretan honey and taste three varieties - carob, pine and thyme - each carrying the scent of a different part of the landscape and a different season. The tasting also takes in rakomelo, the traditional honey-based spirit, and local cheese paired with honey.

  3. Vineyard walk and winery visit in Patsos

In the lush area of Patsos we visit a small, family-owned winery. The visit begins outside with a guided walk through the vineyard, covering the indigenous grape varieties, the influence of the Cretan climate and the traditional cultivation methods passed down through generations. Inside, you follow the process from harvesting and fermentation to ageing and bottling.

  4. Tasting five Cretan wines

The visit ends with a seated tasting of five different labels, selected to show the diversity and character of Cretan wine. Each is introduced as you taste, so the aromas and flavours make sense in the context of the vineyard you have just walked through.

  5. Coffee at Gidospito by the Potamon Dam

The last stop is Gidospito, near the impressive Potamon Dam, for a traditional coffee in a quiet setting surrounded by water and hills. It is an unhurried end to the day before the drive back to your accommodation.

We booked a private wine and honey experience with Ernest and it was an exceptional day. From communication to timely pick up and seamless journey. We had enough time to learn about the honey making, enjoy cheese and views and then on to the vineyard small group tour. It was well organised and informative and in a beautiful setting. We tried 5 wines accompanied by olives and bread and Ernest took some wonderful photos throughout. 100/ recommend.
