Spring Wildflowers & Orchids of Crete

1. 1

   Day 1 - Arrival and first impressions

   We meet at Chania International Airport or Heraklion Airport and drive across the island to Spili. The route is a gentle introduction to Crete, through olive groves, cypress trees and wide open country. After settling in, we take a relaxed walk through the surrounding countryside, where spring is already well under way: fields covered with Anemone coronaria in vivid reds and blues, and carpets of yellow Oxalis pes-caprae. The first orchids may already be out, including Anacamptis pyramidalis, Orchis italica and Himantoglossum robertianum.

   Day 2 - Lefka Ori and the Omalos Plateau

   After breakfast we drive west into the Lefka Ori, climbing towards the Omalos Plateau. At nearly 1,000 metres the landscape opens into a vast mountain basin ringed by rugged peaks. On the walks we find Crocus sieberi, Scilla nana and cushions of Anchusa caespitosa, with Tulipa bakeri and Tulipa saxatilis spreading across the plateau and Anemone coronaria adding bursts of colour. Orchids emerge across the mountain fields, along with Orchis prisca, Ranunculus asiaticus and Romulea bulbocodium. Griffon vultures circle on the thermals above, and with luck a golden eagle or even a lammergeier appears over the ridges; hoopoes, larks and choughs work the lower ground. From the plateau we also take in the upper entrance and viewpoints of the Samaria Gorge, where the limestone canyon cuts down through the White Mountains towards the Libyan Sea.

   Day 3 - Imbros Gorge and Aradena

   We head south to walk the Imbros Gorge, an easy but spectacular 8 km descent between towering limestone walls. The cooler, sheltered environment lets specialised plants hold on among the rock faces and crevices: Campanula laciniata, Petromarula pinnata, Staehelina petiolata and the endemic Origanum dictamnus, with Cistus creticus, Salvia fruticosa, Phlomis lanata and Ballota pseudodictamnus along the path. Later we continue to the Aradena Gorge, where the scale is greater again, and botanise among cliffs and rocky slopes for Silene sedoides, Lomelosia cretica and orchids such as Ophrys cretica and Serapias bergonii.

   Day 4 - South Crete, Kourtaliotiko, Preveli and the coast

   After breakfast we drive south to the Kourtaliotiko Gorge, where sheer cliffs make one of the most dramatic settings on the island and plants such as Inula candida and Capparis spinosa cling to vertical rock. We visit the historic Preveli Monastery, then descend into the Preveli palm forest, where the endemic Phoenix theophrasti grows along the riverbanks and the atmosphere turns unexpectedly lush. The day finishes at Triopetra Beach, with coastal species including Lotus creticus, Eryngium maritimum and Pancratium maritimum among the dunes and rocks, and time to slow down by the Libyan Sea.

   Day 5 - Gious Kambos: orchids, tulips and extraordinary diversity

   The Gious Kambos plateau is one of the most important botanical landscapes in Crete, and in spring it turns into a mosaic of orchids, tulips and flowering plants. Among the orchids we look for Ophrys cretica, Ophrys heldreichii, Ophrys tenthredinifera, Ophrys fusca, Ophrys episcopalis, Ophrys bombyliflora, Ophrys lutea and Ophrys iricolor, alongside Anacamptis boryi, Anacamptis laxiflora, Anacamptis quadripunctata, Anacamptis collina, Orchis italica, Orchis anthropophora and Orchis pauciflora. The plateau is equally rich in Tulipa doerfleri, Tulipa saxatilis, Fritillaria messanensis, Iris tuberosa, Gladiolus italicus, Arum creticum and Arisarum vulgare. What is out depends on rainfall and seasonal conditions, so the plateau is different every year. Hoopoes call across the grasslands, larks rise from the fields and griffon vultures circle high overhead.

   Day 6 - Psiloritis and high mountain flora

   Today we climb into the Psiloritis range, towards the higher slopes of Mount Ida. The scenery becomes more rugged and isolated, with mountain views in every direction. Here we find high-altitude species including Tulipa cretica, abundant Crocus sieberi, Cyclamen creticum and Scilla nana, along with Arum creticum, Arum idaeum, Iris unguicularis subsp. cretica, and alpine cushions of Acantholimon androsaceum among the rocks. It is a quieter day, where the reward is in the detail and in the resilience of Crete's mountain flora.

7. 7

   Day 7 - Departure

   After breakfast we drive back across the island for departure flights from Chania or Heraklion. The final crossing is a chance to look back on a week of mountain gorges, rare flowers, birds and spring light.
