The Cretan Nature & Village Journey is a five to six hour private day tour inland from the north coast, run daily for groups of up to eight with hotel pick-up at 09:00. It combines Greek coffee or mountain tea in the square at Spili beside its 25 lion-head fountains, an easy walk into the Kourtaliotiko Gorge to the cliff springs and waterfalls, with an optional swim in the cold pools, and free time at the Kalypso fjord, a sheltered inlet with deep turquoise water. Difficulty is easy, a professional photoshoot is included, and the price is €250 for a group of up to four plus a €5 per person gorge admission.

The day starts by leaving the coast behind and following winding roads that climb gently into the mountains. Olive groves spread across the hillsides, broken by stone terraces and small chapels that look untouched. As you gain height the air gets cooler and fresher and the scenery more dramatic; this part of Crete is quiet and unpolished, far from the resorts, and the slower pace is obvious within half an hour of setting off.
The route strings together three very different places. Spili is a working mountain village where the fountain, not the café, is still the social centre. Kourtaliotiko Gorge is raw geology: sheer walls, springs bursting straight out of the rock, and water cold enough to take your breath away. Kalypso is the reward at the end, a narrow inlet between cliffs where the sea is calm and deep.
Nothing here is compulsory. Some guests swim at both the waterfalls and the fjord, others dip their feet, others stay dry and take photographs. The walking is easy throughout and the afternoon can be spent over lunch at a seaside taverna or simply in the water.

Spili - village life and local traditions
The first stop is Spili, one of the best-preserved villages in southern Crete, built amphitheatrically on the hillside and known for its traditional architecture, flower-filled balconies and the Lion Fountain, where icy spring water pours endlessly from carved stone lion heads. The fountain has always been the heart of the village: locals fill bottles there, swap news and sit in the shade. You sit in the square for the Cretan morning ritual of Greek coffee or aromatic mountain tea, then have free time to walk the narrow stone streets, look into the small shops or simply watch the village go about its day.
Through the wild landscape to Kourtaliotiko Gorge
Leaving the village the road runs south into steadily wilder country until the dramatic entrance of the Kourtaliotiko Gorge appears. The gorge was carved by water over thousands of years and is one of the most impressive natural sites in the region. Walking in, the temperature drops and the sound of wind and running water takes over; springs burst directly from the cliffs and feed small waterfalls and streams, the air smells of wild herbs, and the light between the rock walls is extraordinary. The walk is easy, with frequent stops. For anyone feeling adventurous there is a chance to swim near the waterfalls - the water is very cold even in summer, a genuine shock at first, and completely refreshing.

Kalypso is a narrow, sheltered inlet ringed by steep rock cliffs with unusually clear turquoise water, often called the only natural fjord in Crete. The water is calm and deep, it reflects the cliffs, and the colours shift with the light through the afternoon. You get plenty of free time here to swim, float in the bay, explore the rocky edges or just sit and look.
Optional lunch and a relaxed afternoon
After the swimming there is an optional stop at a traditional taverna by the sea: crisp salads, grilled meat or fish, local cheese and a glass of wine - simple food done well. If you would rather not eat, the same time can go on another swim, a walk along the coast or a quiet coffee by the water.

Yes. If you are feeling adventurous you can dive into the crystal-clear springs. They are refreshing, to put it mildly - one of the most revitalising feelings in Crete.

We avoid the tourist centres. We sit for a coffee in a quiet village square, meet the locals and see the side of Crete that has not changed in decades.
Do I need special gear?+
Just comfortable walking shoes and your swimwear. We handle the rest, including the scenic drives through the most dramatic mountain passes.

It is a dream for photographers. From the sheer cliffs of the gorge to the traditional stone architecture of the villages, you will want your camera ready.

Five to six hours, with pick-up from your accommodation at 09:00. It runs every day.
