The Authentic Cretan Cooking Class is a 5-6 hour small-group day in a traditional taverna at the foot of Psiloritis, where you cook a Cretan lunch with Ms Ntina and then sit down to eat it. Pick-up is from your accommodation at 10:30 and the drive crosses the Rethymno highlands, passing the Gorge of Patsos and stopping for coffee at the Potamon Dam. The class is fully hands-on and based on home recipes: Greek salad, dakos, gemista and Sfakian pie, prepared with fresh local ingredients and served family-style with local wine or raki. It runs every Monday, Thursday and Friday for up to eight guests, is rated easy, and includes a professional photoshoot with edited photos delivered within 48 hours.

  • Cook in a village kitchen looking out at Psiloritis, Crete's highest mountain
  • A hands-on lesson with Ms Ntina using fresh, locally sourced ingredients
  • Four classics from scratch: Greek salad, dakos, gemista and Sfakian pie
  • A coffee stop at the Potamon Dam and a drive past the Gorge of Patsos
  • Sit down family-style to eat what you have cooked, with local wine or raki
  • Professional photoshoot included, edited gallery delivered within 48 hours

The day starts with a scenic drive through the heart of Rethymno, through hill villages and up into the Cretan highlands. The route passes the Gorge of Patsos, with its dramatic cliffs and green ravine, and the quiet Potamon Dam, where the water reflects the surrounding mountains and there is time to stop for coffee before carrying on.

Ms Ntina's taverna sits near the base of Psiloritis, Crete's highest mountain. Before any cooking begins you sit down to a traditional Greek coffee, which is as much a part of the day as the lesson itself: a slow half hour to talk with your host and settle into the pace of a mountain village.

The class is fully hands-on and built on home recipes rather than restaurant technique. You prepare Greek salad with fresh vegetables, feta, olives and extra virgin olive oil; dakos, barley rusks topped with grated tomato, cheese and herbs; gemista, tomatoes and peppers baked with rice, herbs and olive oil; and Sfakian pie, a thin handmade cheese pie from the Sfakia region, lightly pan-fried and served warm, often with a touch of honey. Each step is explained simply, the way it would be done in a local kitchen.

While you cook, the conversation turns to where the dishes come from: the seasons they belong to, the family gatherings and celebrations they mark, and why they are still made in almost every household on the island. When everything is ready, everyone eats together at one table, served straight from the kitchen, with local wine or raki alongside. Nothing is rushed.

Så går dagen

  1. 10:30 - pick-up and the drive inland

We collect you from your accommodation and drive through the heart of Rethymno, past charming villages and into the highlands. The route takes in the Gorge of Patsos, with its dramatic cliffs and lush green landscape, before reaching open mountain country.

  2. Coffee stop at the Potamon Dam

We pause at the Potamon Dam, where the clear water reflects the surrounding mountains. It is a short stop for coffee and photographs, and the first proper view of the inland Rethymno landscape the tour spends the day in.

  3. Welcome Greek coffee at the taverna

Ms Ntina's traditional taverna sits near the base of Psiloritis, and the welcome is a Greek coffee at a table outside. It is a quiet moment to unwind, talk with your host and take in the setting before the cooking starts.

  4. The cooking class

The lesson is fully hands-on and follows traditional Cretan home recipes. You prepare Greek salad, dakos on barley rusks with grated tomato, cheese and herbs, gemista baked with rice and olive oil, and a thin handmade Sfakian cheese pie, lightly pan-fried and finished with honey. Everything uses fresh local ingredients and every step is explained as it would be in a village kitchen.

  5. Lunch at the shared table

Once the food is ready everyone sits down together and eats family-style, served warm straight from the kitchen. Local wine or raki comes with the meal. There is no schedule to keep to for this part of the day: it is a long, unhurried lunch with mountain views and conversation.

  6. The Memory Maker photoshoot

Your host photographs the day with professional cameras and lenses, guiding you to the best light and the most photogenic corners of the taverna and the village. You receive a curated, high-resolution gallery on your device within 48 hours at no extra cost.
