Chania vs Heraklion: Which Should You Base Your Crete Trip In?

Both cities work. The question is what you are prepared to drive past. Chania puts you within ninety minutes of Crete's best beaches and its three great gorges, and asks you to give up on the east. Heraklion puts you fifteen minutes from Knossos and within reach of the whole island, and asks you to accept that the coast on your doorstep is the least attractive on Crete.

Drive times, which is what actually decides this

Distance is the single most underrated factor in a Crete trip. The island is 260 km end to end and the national road is the only fast route. These are typical one-way driving times in normal traffic.

Read that table twice before booking. From Chania, a day trip to Spinalonga is five hours in the car. From Heraklion, a day at Elafonisi is seven. Neither is impossible; both ruin the day.

The six questions people actually ask

Beaches: Chania wins, and it is not close

Western Crete holds Elafonisi, Balos and Falassarna, and the city beaches at Nea Chora and Chrissi Akti are sandy, clean and walkable from the old town. Heraklion has good sand to the east at Hersonissos and Malia and quiet coves in the south at Matala, but the shore immediately around the capital is exposed to the north wind and backed by industry and road. If your holiday is mostly swimming, base west.

Nightlife: depends what you mean by nightlife

Heraklion has the only genuine year-round city nightlife on Crete, sustained by a large student population rather than by tourists. It does not shut in October. The eastern resorts of Malia and Hersonissos, half an hour away, are the package party strip. Chania's evening is lounge-shaped: wine bars, cocktails on the harbour wall, tavernas that keep serving until one in the morning. Loud, but not late-night-club loud.

Families: both, differently

Chania has the safer swimming. The Apokoronas bays at Almyrida and Kalyves shelve gently and sit out of the prevailing wind, and the old town is closed to traffic, which matters more with a five-year-old than any list of attractions. Heraklion has the better wet-weather and educational options: the Natural History Museum on the seafront, the Cretaquarium at Gournes, and Knossos itself. If your children are old enough to be interested in the Minoans, Heraklion earns its keep.

Luxury: Chania for character, Elounda for service

Chania's old town has the best boutique stock on Crete — restored Venetian mansions with six or eight rooms behind a stone doorway. Heraklion city is a business-hotel town. But the five-star resorts of Elounda, an hour east of Heraklion, are the most expensive addresses in Greece outside Mykonos, with private pools over Mirabello Bay. If you want a resort, you want Elounda and you fly into Heraklion.

Budget: Heraklion

Heraklion is a real city that has to price for locals and students, so it has hostels, cheap tavernas away from the waterfront and cheaper mid-range hotels. Chania's old town charges old-town prices from mid-June to early September. Outside those months, the gap narrows sharply.

Transport: Heraklion, decisively

Heraklion is the island's hub. It has the largest airport, the main passenger port with daily ferries to Piraeus and seasonal sailings to Santorini and the Cyclades, and it sits in the middle of the national road so nothing is more than three hours away. Chania has an airport and a port at Souda with an overnight Piraeus service, but it is 60 km further from the centre of the island, and every eastbound day trip pays for that twice.

Which airport should you fly into?

Fly into Chania (CHQ) if you are staying anywhere from Rethymno westwards. Fly into Heraklion (HER) if you are staying in Heraklion, Hersonissos, Agios Nikolaos or Elounda. Rethymno is the genuine toss-up: it sits almost exactly halfway, roughly an hour from either airport, so book whichever flight is cheaper or better timed.

The verdict

Choose Chania if you want a beautiful place to come back to every evening, gorge walks, and the best beaches on the island; accept that eastern Crete is a separate trip.

Choose Heraklion if Minoan archaeology is the reason you are coming, if you want to island-hop by ferry, if you are travelling on a budget, or if you want a single base from which nothing on Crete is out of reach.

Choose Rethymno if you cannot decide. It is 50 minutes from Chania and an hour from Heraklion, it has a Venetian old town and a fortress of its own, a long sandy town beach, and the shortest average drive to the south coast of any of the three. It is the reason most of our tours run from here.

Getting between the two

The KTEL coach runs hourly along the north coast between Chania, Rethymno and Heraklion and takes about 2 hours 45 minutes end to end. It is cheap, air-conditioned and punctual. With luggage, an early flight or a group, a pre-booked private transfer with a fixed price is the calmer option — we run transfers between Rethymno and both airports.

What a week looks like from each

From Chania, a good week is: two days in and around the old town and Nea Chora; the Samaria or Imbros gorge; a day at Elafonisi or Falassarna; a day on the Akrotiri peninsula for Stavros and the monasteries; and a day trip east to Rethymno. Knossos is possible as a long day, and most people skip it.

From Heraklion, a good week is: Knossos and the Archaeological Museum together; a day in the wine villages around Archanes; Phaistos and the Messara plain in the south; a boat to Spinalonga from Plaka; a beach day at Matala or Agia Pelagia; and, if you want it, one long push west to Rethymno. Samaria is a twelve-hour day and most people skip it.

Notice what disappears in each case. From Chania you give up the Minoans; from Heraklion you give up the gorges and the famous beaches. That is the actual trade, and no amount of early starts changes it.

Two things that are not close

Airport transfer time. Heraklion's airport is 5 km from the city, so you can be at your hotel twenty minutes after the wheels touch down. Chania's is 14 km out on the Akrotiri peninsula, which is still quick, but if you are staying west of Chania in Platanias or Kissamos, add another 30 to 60 minutes.

Winter. Heraklion works in January. Chania's old town is beautiful and mostly closed.
